STD Testing Q & A

What is an STD?

A sexually transmitted disease, or STD, is an infection transmitted through unprotected sexual contact with another person. Examples of STDs include pubic lice, chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital warts, human papillomavirus (HPV), and syphilis. It’s possible to contract more than 1 STD at a time.

Why is STD testing important?

If left untreated, some STDs can cause serious consequences for the patient and any of their sexual partners. For example, some STDs cause inflammation in the pelvis that can lead to infertility for women. HIV is an STD that can be deadly without treatment. In addition, some STDs may not cause any symptoms at all. STD testing can identify these illnesses before they become more serious.

What are the symptoms of an STD?

STDs can cause a variety of symptoms. However, some of the most common symptoms of STDs include discharge from the penis or vagina, pain in the genitals, growths or rashes on the genitals, fever, itching, and burning during urination.

What types of STD testing are available?

Different STDs require different types of testing. For example, Dr. Calonje may be able to diagnose some STDs based on a physical exam, while others may require a urine sample, blood sample, or another type of tissue sample. Dr. Calonje can test for most types of STDs. He will determine which tests a patient needs based on the patient’s symptoms, medical history, sexual history, and concerns.

When should patients seek STD testing?

Patients who have symptoms that indicate an STD should always request testing. However, many infections don’t cause noticeable symptoms. For this reason, Dr. Calonje recommends STD testing to his patients who don’t have any symptoms of an STD but have had unprotected sex. STD testing is essential for anyone who has had unprotected sex with an individual who has been diagnosed with an STD.

What treatments are available?

Some STDs respond well to treatment and can be eliminated completely. However, other STDs don’t currently have a cure. In cases where no cure is available, Dr. Calonje will recommend treatment options designed to help the patient deal with symptoms of the STD and/or prevent the spread of infection to others.
